Starter Activity

Students should begin the lesson by playing Pass the Beat.

In a four beat pattern, students will say one word each, like so:

PASS / THE / BEAT / (clap)

Students will continue to pass this pattern around the circle, until one of them says the wrong word, or goes too fast or too slow. Once a student is 'out' they must sit down - its important that they are silent for the rest of the game to prevent the other students from being distracted.

The winning student will choose the song to be used for the remainder of the lesson.

Lesson Body

Present the winning student with three choices -- I suggest High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco, Save Your Tears by the Weeknd and Sunroof by Nicky Youre.

You'll need a basically 4 bar chord progression for each (doesn't have to be perfect for each section of the song) and lyrics.

Here are mine! ------>

The students should split into three groups -- drums (chairs and sticks), boomwhackers and singers. They should be allowed to choose their own groups, as long as there are at least 4 boomwhacking students.

Each group will direct their own learning and practice, with some initial assistance from the teacher. Once they've had 5-10 minutes to practice, pull them together and put it all together with piano.

If there is time left, let the students swap parts! If they know the song really well, they should sing, otherwise they should read the score/listen to the song tracks to know what to place on their new parts.
